Nounbuildings
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. In this article, the first usage is generally intended unless otherwise specified. Buildings come in a wide amount of shapes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons. Buildings serve several needs of society - primarily as shelter from weather and as general living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat into the inside (a place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful). Ever since the first cave paintings, buildings have also become objects or canvasess of artistic expression. In recent years, interest in sustainable planning and building practices has also become part of the design process of many new buildings. DefinitionsTo differentiate buildings in the usage of this article from other buildings and other structures that are not intended for continuous human occupancy, the latter are called nonbuilding structures or simply structures. Structural height in technical usage is the height to the highest architectural detail on building from street-level. Depending on how they are classified, spires and masts may or may not be included in this height. Spires and masts used as antennas are not generally included. The definition of a low-rise vs. a high-rise building is a matter of debate, but generally three stories or less is considered low-rise. HistoryThe first shelter on Earth constructed by a relatively close ancestor to humans is believed to be built 500,000 years ago by an early ancestor of humans, Homo erectus. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What are the buildings in Tijuana made out of? Q. I'm writing an essay about my visit to Tijuana, and I'm not sure how to describe the buildings. Not the buildings among the main street, but the ones more in the side areas where there were little vendors set up and the streets were all dusty and all the beggars were. Right now I've described them as clay brick. Is this right or is there a better way? Stucco perhaps? Asked by Joie - Sat Nov 3 17:46:43 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi, I think you are looking for the areas that are not well constructed. If I'm correct here goes. I'm always interested in how a building is constructed and the safety systems, like exits, fire sprinklers, windows and alarms. I don't want to get caught in an emergency and or trapped. From my experience between Tijuana to Ensanada the mode of construction is too use the most convenient materials, plywood of any size and thickness, wood pallets, corrugated tin and plastics, heavy duty cardboard, used wood products like 2X2 and 2X4 I've even seen metal studs used. When available Brick and Mortar, some stucco with chicken wire and as little lath as possible. The mortar mix is a lot less structurally sound as what is required in the USA. I currently have contents insurance with company A, due for renewal in 2 weeks time, and buildings insurance with company B, due for renewal at the end of June. Company A is offering free contents insurance if you take out buildings insurance at the same time. If I do this two weeks from now, would I get a pro-rate rebate from company B, for the period April-June? Asked by Hibee - Mon Mar 17 10:16:23 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Yes you will, they are only allowed to keep premiums EARNED not billed, they haven't earned it. Keeping all the coverages with 1 company is the way to go too - smart move. Answered by Tom Larsen - Mon Mar 17 15:56:40 2008 How can steel frame buildings like WTC building 7 fall completely in one go?
Q. Yet in other steel frame buildings they have to spend months setting up explosive charges. Why don't demolition people just set fire to a building if that all it takes? Thank you Michael but WTC7 did fall in it's own footprint and was not hit by any plane. The damage caused by falling steel from the twin towers was not enough to bring it down. Other buildings closer had just as much damage. Asked by Smiling JW - Wed Oct 29 12:14:04 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Building 7 was the third skyscraper to be reduced to rubble on September 11, 2001. According to the government, fires, primarily, leveled this building, but fires have never before or since destroyed a steel skyscraper. The team that investigated the collapse were kept away from the crime scene. By the time they published their inconclusive report in May, 2002, the evidence had been destroyed. Why did the government rapidly recycle the steel from the largest and most mysterious engineering failure in world history, and why has the media remained silent? The BBC and CNN also both reported the collapse of Building 7 more than twenty minutes before it actually fell. The misreporting not only stands out as a glaring error-- with the WTC… [cont.] Answered by Luke - Wed Oct 29 12:52:20 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "buildings" Local news in brief: Big buildings decision for council
